Last edition’s Copa America finalists won their respective quarter-final match to join host Brazil in the semi-final of Copa America 2019. Argentina defeated Venezuela 2-0 in the match played at Maracana stadium. Similarly, Chile defeated Colombia in penalty shoot-out.
In the first match of the day, goal in either half from Lautaro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso were enough for Messi’s men to confirm their semi-final clash against Brazil.
In a much improved game by Argentina, the undefeated Venezuela merely threaten the Argentine goalie. Lautaro Martinez gave an early lead in the 10th minute when he cleverly dodge the Venezuela goalkeeper with back flip to score. substitute Lo Celso converted the re-bound shot from Sergio Aguero after Venezuela goal-keeper failed to collect the ball completely.
Argentina are looking to end their 26-years long wait for an International trophy and first International trophy for Lionel Messi. In the course, they will meet the tournament favorites Brazil in the semi-final.
Defending Champions on course for third straight title
Defending champions Chile defeated Colombia 4-5 on penalties after the regular time ended in goalless draw. Chile had taken the lead through Arturo Vidal’s goal in the 70th minute but the goal was disallowed by VAR. Similarly, another Chile goal was also denied by the VAR and the match headed to spot kick battle.
The penalty shootout too was looking tied with four for four for the both teams. William Tesillo shoot the penalty wide before Alexis Sanchez sealing victory for the defending champions with fifth penalty goal.
Chile will play either Uruguay or Peru in the semi-final match.
